Little Allercleugh is a scenic stone cottage situated above the valley near the village of St. John's Chapel, and served as our miner's home away from home for our first three years.

The town of Stanhope is the commercial center of the Dale, offering several bakers, grocers, a DIY, post office, and not a few pubs. The Durham Dales Center is a good place to get local maps and guides.

The hills just north of Stanhope are dotted with numerous old tailings heaps, evidence of former mining activities.

The Dale contains many reminders of the once dominant lead mining industry, which flourished during the 19th century and formed much of the basis for the local economy. Here is what remains of the Greenlaws Middle Horse Level, near Daddry Shield.

The Golden Lion in St. John's Chapel is a friendly local pub and serves as the crew's second office.
