A Tour of Weardale, Page 3 |

Signaling the last days of a brief northern summer, the moors throughout the Northern Pennines come alive with purple heather. In late August 2005 the area above Crawleyside Bank north of Stanhope was particularly colorful. |
| Located in the western end of Weardale on the road to Nenthead and Alston, the Killhope North of England Lead Mining Museum is a reconstructed 19th century lead mine which is now operated as a museum. The water wheel in the center background was recently rebuilt, and powers a ore separation jigs located in the building behind. Check it out at: www.durham.gov.uk/killhope. |

The Park Level mine entrance at Killhope is maintained, and tours are lead to still accessable portions of the underground workings. |
| The Mine House is a cottage near the entrance of the old Greenlaws Mine in Daddry Shield. Part of it, known as "The Drift" is maintained as a holiday rental by owners Bob Coates and Mary Sewell, and now serves as our miner's summer home. It is available at other times and if interested, send Bob and Mary an e-mail at: mine.house@virgin.net. |

| The Allenheads Inn, located in the former mining village of Allenheads is a friendly local pub known for its vast collection of "stuff" covering most interior surfaces. New owners have recently cleaned it up a bit so you can now actually get to the bar to order a drink. |
