A Photo Tour of Weardale, Page 1

Weardale in Winter. Ian Forbes, curator of the Killhope Lead Mining Museum took this photo on Christmas eve, 2000 from his home in Weardale. Get out your skis!

The Wear Valley. A view of Weardale looking west from near the village of Eastgate. Though once forested, human activity over the centuries has produced a landscape dominated by open pastures and moorland.

Little Allercleugh. Little Allercleugh is a scenic stone cottage situated above the valley near the village of St. John's Chapel, and serves as our miner's home away from home. Owners Jeremy and Phillippa Rowe rent the cottage out by the week, and are marvelous folks. If you would like to stay there, contact them at: jeremy@wearri.demon.co.uk. It might get a little crowded when our crew is there during the summer, though.

A Rainbow at Little Allercleugh. It rains a lot in Weardale, which is why everything stays so green. Occassionally one gets other colors as well.

A pond in an old quarry. Along with mining, stone quarrying was formerly a large business in Weardale. This quarry, located near the Rogerley Mine produced a hard, layered sandstone of the type used for roof tiles on buildings throughout the dale.
