A Photo Tour of Weardale, Page 2

The Killhope Wheel. Located in the western end of Weardale on the road to Nenthead and Alston, the Killhope North of England Lead Mining Museum is a reconstructed 19th century lead mine which is now operated as a museum. The water wheel in this photo was recently rebuilt, and powers a series of ore separation jigs located in the building behind. Specimen mining at the Rogerley produces galena (lead ore) as a byproduct, which is donated to Killhope for use in demonstrating 19th century mining technology. Check it out at: www.durham.gov.uk/killhope.

The Rookhope Inn. Located in the former mining village of Rookhope, proprietors Steve Thompson and Jane Brown provide excellent home cooked meals (ask for the pan hackledy) and the best selection of local real ales in the area. Rooms are also available. Check it out at: www.rookhopeinn.fsnet.co.uk.

The Mill Race Hotel. The Mill Race Hotel in Wolsingham in a lively local pub and hotel featuring good food, and an excellent selection of real ales. If you're a fish and chips fan, don't miss the "Whitby Cod". Proprietors Denis and Mary Walker are always quite welcoming no matter how muddy the crew is after a day at the mine.

The Golden Lion. The Golden Lion is a friendly local pub in St. John's Chapel, and serves as the "second office" for the mining crew during the summer. If you're in the area, stop in for a "Sheep" or two, but make sure Jeffrey doesn't try to give you one from the pens next door - unless you're into that sort of thing.
