Fluorite and Other Minerals From the North Pennines, England

Presented here is a small selection of Fluorite and other mineral specimens from various locations in the North Pennines, England. Sadly, all of these once prolific mines are now closed and quality specimens are becoming scarce. If you are interested in learning more about the many former specimen-producing mines in Northern England, please see our Weardale Mines page. As always, the scale coin, a British 2 pence, is 1 inch (2.6 cm) in diameter. We will be posting additional specimens to this page as we come across them, so please check back.

Barite with Dolomite and Hematite, Frizington, Cumbria

A double-terminated blue barite crystal, 9.5 cm long, associated with a couple smaller barites and some dolomite matrix. A few faces on the barites are selectively coated with fine-grained red hematite. Minor abrassion on the reverse side near the tip, otherwise in very good condition.

Calcite with Hematite, Stank Mine, Furness District, Cumbria

A large hedgehog-like mound of well-formed scalenohedral calcite crystals up to 2.3 cm long, covering a mass of earthen red hematite. Patched of calcite are included with hematite giving a nice color contrast. 15x11x6 cm overall size. High quality specimen from a long closed mine.

A deep amber-colored cluster of untwined fluorite up to 2.4 cm on edge. 5x3.5x2.5 cm overall size. very good condition.

Fluorite on Quartz, Heights Quarry, Eastgate, Weardale, Co. Durham

A cluster of transparent, well-formed green penetration twined fluorite crystals up to 1.5 cm on edge, on a quartz and ironstone matrix. 10x5x4 cm overall size. Nice specimen from a classic locality.

Fluorite, South Vein, Heights Quarry, Eastgate, Weardale, Co. Durham

A perfectly formed penetration twinned fluorite crystal, 2.5 cm on edge, aesthetically perched on a bed of smaller fluorites and minor quartz. Fluorite is a deep green with purple highlights. Small chip on one corner, all else good. 7x5x3 cm overall size.

Fluorite, Eastgate Cement Quarry, Weardale, Co. Durham

A triangular plate of limestone matrix with a cluster of sharp, transparent penetration twinned fluorite crystals up to 1.6 cm on edge, coating one side. Fluorites are green with internal purple zones. 11x6x4 cm overall size. Excellent condition.

Fluorite on Quartz, Blackdene Mine, Ireshopeburn, Weardale, Co. Durham

A cluster of several untwined purple fluorite crystals up to 3.4 cm on edge, on a matrix of white crystalline quartz. Scattered about the quartz are many small twined fluorites, galena and chalcopyrite crystals. Classic Blackdene from the Slitt Vein, early 1970s. 12x11x7 cm overall. Ex A. Scoble collection.

A well formed, transparent, pale purple fluorite twin, 4.5 cm on edge, with a scattering of small, sharp, diamond-like quartz crystals. Has several old labels including Wards ca. 1940s. 5x5x4 cm overall size.

Galena with Fluorite and Quartz, Rotherhope Fell Mine, Cumbria

A cluster of several lustrous cube-octahedral galena crystals up to 4 cm on edge. To one side are four untwined purple fluorite crystals up to 3.5 cm on edge. Coating one side are numerous quartz crystals. 11x7x4 cm overall size. Ex Arthur Scoble collection. Very good condition specimen from a rare locality.

Specimen: Nenthead-1

Calcite on Dolomite, Nenthead, Alston Moor, Cumbria

Numerous cream-colored calcite crystals of flattened rhombohedral habit up to 2.6 cm in size, scattered over of matrix of crystalline dolomite. Minor galena in the matrix. 9x6x5 cm overall size. Labeled simply as "Cumberland" but likely from one of the mines around Nenthead such as Smallcleugh or Brownley Hill. Good condition.
