Winter in Weardale

Over the years, we have spent almost all our time in Weardale during the summer, when the days are long and the weather fair. Well, mostly fair. Almost all the photos on this site were taken between late May and early September. In recent years, we have made a couple visits during the Winter Holidays, and seen what the dale is like when the days are short and the weather cold. Different, but equally beautiful.

A row of bare trees in the upper dale.

It may be a cold December day in St. John's Chapel, but the horses are still out.

Frost rims some holly leaves.

Frost covered trees and a farmhouse in the upper dale near Westgate.

A flock of rooks perched high up in a leafless oak.

A frozen water seep along Slitt Wood in Middlehope Burn.

A winter fog settles into the dale, but the upper fells are bright.

Snow on the open moor around the old Groverake mine in upper Rookhope Burn.

Whenever it snows, the sheep just seem to hunker down and wait it out.

A dusting of snow covers the high moors around the Dale.

A spider's web hangs heavy with frost.

A full moon rises over the Dale on Christmas Day.

A cold fog shrouds the Dale, but the pub's open and there's a fire on!
